Planting of trees in Wetherby on Walton Road verge by Wetherby Town Council, with support from the White Rose Forest

As part of an ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, Wetherby Town Council is pleased to announce the successful completion of its latest tree planting initiative.

The Mayor of Wetherby Councillor Dawn Payne, and Deputy Mayor Councillor Connor Mulhall, were on site to oversee the groundbreaking and first trees being planted on Walton Road verge.

The project has been supported and funded by the White Rose Forest, the Community Forest for North and West Yorkshire, through their Trees for Climate grants programme, part of the Government’s Nature for Climate Fund.

Wetherby Town Council worked with the White Rose Forest team to select a mix of suitable native species for the site. The tree planting location - adjacent to the busy Walton Road and less than 200m from the A1 motorway - will improve air quality in Wetherby, acting as a natural buffer against vehicle pollution. A range of native trees have been planted, including Silver Birch, Field Maple, Beech and Holly.

James Skipper, White Rose Forest Project Officer, said: “We were really pleased to work with Wetherby Town Council, whose enthusiasm for improving the natural environment is a great example to other councils in Yorkshire. We know our town and parish councils play a vital role in improving landscapes for nature, climate, and communities, so we encourage others to get in touch to find out how White Rose Forest can support them.”    

This project is just one step within Wetherby Town Council’s pledge to commit to climate change adaptation and to help develop a greener and more resilient future. The trees are tangible contributions towards a healthier planet and a greener future for generations to come.
