Wetherby charity’s urgent volunteer appeal as activities attendance surges

Wetherby’s leading older persons charity is urgently appealing for new volunteers to join its ranks, as growing demand for its activity schedule risks outstripping current capacity.

Wetherby in Support of the Elderly, which supports older people across Wetherby and surrounding villages, has seen attendance at its regular timetabled events and its community café – the WiSE Owl Café - rise significantly.

The surge in support is a remarkable sign of the programme's success, but one that places increasing pressure on the charity’s small, dedicated volunteer team.

Without new volunteers coming forward, WiSE warns it may be forced to reduce its activities timetable - a prospect that would have a direct impact on the wellbeing and social connection of older people in the community.

WiSE Chief Operating Officer Mark Dobson, said: "Our activities programme has grown significantly and we're busier than ever. That's something to be really proud of. But we need more hands on deck to keep everything running - from setting up and serving refreshments through to the raffle and clearing away afterwards.”

WiSE currently has roles available at the WiSE Owl Café at Boston Spa Village Hall, Forget Me Not café – a respite session for carers of those living with dementia, and its regular programme of activities, including social events, craft sessions and exercise classes.

WiSE is particularly keen to hear from volunteers who are physically able to help with tasks such as moving tables and equipment. The organisation is eager to bring in fresh faces - including younger members of the community - to help sustain and grow what it offers.
