Business owners got a rare chance to share their stories with top regional journalists at a recent sell-out speed networking event in Yorkshire.

Organised by York PR experts Jo Leatham and Linda Harrison, Meet The Media brought together a diverse range of businesses to help demystify PR.

Attendees heard pitching advice from Darren Greenwood, Business Editor at The York Press, Elly Fiorentini, Senior Journalist - Communities at BBC Radio York, Kathryn Armstrong, Editor of Yorkshire Life magazines, and Andrew Palmer, Group editor of The p.ublished group, including The Yorkshire Times.

The unique event, held at Patch on 19th March, was funded by the York and North Yorkshire Growth Hub. It aims to break down the barriers that so often exist between businesses and the media – and get attendees valuable press coverage.

Lucy Hurn, founder of Feel Fit With Lucy triathlon coaching, said: “I came away buzzing with inspiration and confidence. By the end of the next day, I’d secured a regular column plus a number of articles in a regional publication.”

Karen McMillan is a communications and creative consultant supporting purpose-led businesses to communicate clearly and authentically.

Karen, who also co-creates Rise & Rave, a wellbeing-focused daytime dance experience, added: “This event allows PR to feel simple, accessible and genuinely achievable. From a conversation with a local journalist, I had a story featured in my local newspaper paper within two days! It was great to be able to turn the advice and guidance into action and see the results so quickly.”

Other attendees said the morning had helped them to better understand what stories journalists look for.

“Being able to pitch your own ideas, get feedback and also meet other businesses is a brilliant opportunity,” explained Sophie Roberts, Founder of West Plum Studio.

Laura Naylor, founder of Laura Naylor Nutrition, said: “It struck me how genuinely interested the journalists were in my business and my story. I received lots of advice for achieving quick wins with my PR and how best to present my articles for a good chance of publication. A fabulous event with genuine, supportive professionals. Exactly what York’s small business owners need.”

Helen Reynolds, founder of Viscount Folly, described Meet The Media as “pure gold”, adding: “The journalists were so generous with their practical advice and insights. For example, how stories that start in the regional press can go national, or even global. One journalist has already approached me for more details and photos of my 'Bridgerton for Borrowers' tissue box cover kits!"

Mary Mandis, founder of Yorkshire Rose Candles, said: "I have learned to not be afraid to tell your story, it is not as scary as you think. I would definitely attend again."

Cher Casey, founder of The Mindful Organiser, added: "Meet the Media allowed me to think more about my business and what I can offer the public. Linda and Jo have drawn upon their individual expertise, and together they've created something really special.”

Linda, a PR expert for small businesses who previously worked as a regional and national newspaper journalist, said: "We genuinely want to help founders to build their confidence with PR – and shine a light on their businesses.

“There’s always such a brilliant energy in the room at these events. People are often nervous beforehand, but that quickly changes once they meet the journalists. It's brilliant to see this happen. PR isn't just for big businesses – it’s for solopreneurs and start-ups too. And the sooner you start getting press coverage, the sooner you start building credibility and trust – and telling a wider audience about what you do. We’ve seen how that boosts sales and results in growth.”

Jo, who has over 30-years’ experience in PR and specialises in helping businesses to tell their story, said: “We’ve been absolutely delighted with the response to Meet The Media, with more than 100 businesses now attending across our four events. Thanks to the invaluable funding support from the York and North Yorkshire Growth Hub, we’ve been able to make these sessions accessible and impactful for so many founders.

“What’s been especially rewarding is seeing the real outcomes - from businesses gaining press coverage to building the confidence to share their stories more widely. That’s exactly what these events are all about: breaking down barriers and helping businesses get the visibility they deserve.”

They also run relaxed PR Coffee Mornings, which are ideal for small business owners interested in learning more about how to get more visible. Held monthly in a central York cafe, these are free to attend - just buy a drink.
